Grace Manor’s Favorite Richmond Restaurants:
One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.
~Luciano Pavarotti and William Wright, Pavarotti, My Own Story
Si
214 N Lombardy St, Richmond
804.257.7940
Si is an authentic, Spanish-Style Tapas Bar with a great, reasonably priced wine list. And best of all, it's only a short walk from the Inn. The decor is very modern and chic and makes you feel happy just being there. The service is also warm, friendly, and professional.
Our insider tip is to go early and hang out with the cool people in the comfy lounge area on the second floor and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail. Then prepare to enjoy several inspiring mini-courses.
Here's what we've sampled:
- Stuffed Calamari Over Squid Ink-Infused Calasparra Rice (Yum!)
- Chickpea-Manchego Fries
- Baby Lamb Chops
- Bacon-Wrapped Dates
- Wilted Beet Greens With Currants, Capers, And Almonds
It's really great, but don't take our word for it, read what other Richmonders have to say about it.
Edo’s Squid 411 N. Harrison Street, Richmond
804.864.5488
Ahhhh.......we have a love affair going on with this restaurant! This is one of those neighborhood dives that you just can't get enough of, and conveniently, it's only 4 blocks from the Inn. Edo's specializes in Southern Italian-Style Food, and it's full of spicy, garlic love. Although their menu lists the usual suspects of pastas paired with yummy sauces, there are a few other delights not to be missed. For starters, the Squid Lemon, which is a divine combination of delicate (not chewy) squid rings paired with baby arugula, lemon, pine nuts, and garlic. Save the bread, because you're going to want to dip it in the sauce when you're done. The eggplant parmesan is the size of a football field and can convert any non-eggplant eater into a true believer. Take my word for it! The branzino, which is a whole, Mediterranean Sea Bass, which is simply broiled, seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, and lemon, is crispy on the outside and juicy and flaky on the inside. Edo's is a seafood lover's dream. Check out the large tablet on the wall for the many daily fish specials, as well as the lamb, beef, and veal offerings.
One side bar, it is very noisy, and there's not much atmosphere. Sometimes you just have to pay to play, baby. It's so worth it! See what other locals think.
Carytown Sushi
2923 W. Cary Street, Richmond
804.355.0058
This is our new, favorite sushi restaurant. It's located about 1.5 miles from the Inn, and offers beautiful combinations of fresh sushi and sashimi, as well as hibachi dinners for those who don't partake. This restaurant is all about service. Every time you enter the door, you know you're the #1 priority, and boy do they aim to please. Here are some of our favorites:
- Edamamme
- Black And White Roll (Shrimp And Avocado On The Inside And White Tuna And Black Tobiko On The Outside)
- Naruto Roll (Instead Of The Traditional Seaweed Wrapper, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, And Yellow Tail Are Nestled Inside A Thin Ribbon Of Cucumber And Are Served With A Soy Vinaigrette)
- King Mackerel Sashimi

Acacia Midtown is one of our new favorite restaurants. Conveniently located only
1 mile from the Grace Manor Inn, Acacia Midtown is one new
restaurant you don't want to miss on your next visit to
Richmond. The decor is very chic, almost New Yorky, while
still remaining comfortable. Both the wait staff and
the kitchen staff are very friendly and experienced. On our last visit, here's what we tried:
-
tuna ceviche peruvian style, with cucumbers, onions on
avocado
-
local sausage, melted brie, red onion marmalade
-
butter poached lobster, on fresh pasta, oyster
mushrooms and leeks, basil sauce
-
pan seared rib-eye, onion ring with spinach salad,
roasted fingerling potatoes The homemade pasta
with locally grown mushrooms and poached lobster is
exceptionally delicious and shockingly not too rich. It is a
must try for seafood lovers!
Rowland Fine Dining
2132 W. Main St., Richmond
804.257.9885
Dinner nightly, 5-11 p.m.
Reservations recommended.
Rowland Fine Dining is one of our favorite restaurants to go with groups of 6-8 people, because the size the restaurant is small enough that you still get spectacular service. As always, though,
quality of food trumps service, and luckily, Rowland's does both very well. Rowland's also offers outdoor seating, which is a real treat in the city. On our last visit, here's what we tried:
- Malpeque Oysters on the halfshell
- Fried Calamari tossed with arugula and lemon
balsamic vinaigrette
- Grilled Ostrich Filet with a rutabega new
potato mash, golden chanterelle and Marsala
glace
- Butterbean Cakes with a cucumber, grape
tomato, avocado salsa and spicy cilantro
oil
The Calamari is like no other I've ever
tried. It is a must for squid lovers!
Can Can
3120 Cary Street, Richmond
804.358.PARIS
Reservations recommended.
Can Can is a casual French Brasserie with a lively atmosphere in nearby Cary Town. It offers French classics such as Cod Brandade and Salmon Tartare for starters and Steak Frites, Duck A L'Orange, and Braised Lamb for entrees. Can Can also features a fantastic raw bar offering 6 kinds of oysters on the half shell. For the seafood lover, we recommend the Grand Plateau. It is a 'tower of seafood' presented as 3-tiers with the top tier of steamed lobster, steamed shrimp, and cooked mussels. The middle tier has clams on the half shell, and the bottom tier has oysters on the half shell and cooked lump crabmeat. It is accompanied by three sauces: cocktail, mignonette, and tarragon aioli. For a nice finish, try the Molten Chocolate Cake served with LavAzza coffee.
Amici
3343 W. Cary Street, Richmond
804.353.4700
If creamy, Northern Italian-Style food is what you crave, Amici is your place. It's only a short 1.5 mile drive/walk from the Inn, and it has a cute outdoor cafe. For all of you people watcher's out there, this is a great spot to enjoy a bottle of Chianti. The stuffed pastas here are so delicate that I swear you can see the fillings. My mouth is watering. Here are some of our favorites:
- Carpaccio di manzo (Thin sliced beef loin topped with micro greens and walnuts, parmesan cheese, lemon and extra virgin olive oil)
- Portobello e fontina (Grilled portobello mushroom and melted fontina cheese with garlic, olive oil and basil)
- Agnolotti all panna (Homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta cheese in a light cream sauce)
- Agnello al rosmarino (Pan roasted baby rack of lamb with garlic, rosemary and white wine demi)
One North Belmont
1 N. Belmont Ave, Richmond
804.358.0050
AAA Four Diamond Restaurant...need I say more? This is one of those special occasion restaurants that are sure not to disappoint. One North Belmont only seats 30-40 people and provides a very intimate setting for anniversaries, birthdays, etc. It also works well for getting you out of the doghouse, should you need assistance.
It doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you step inside the door, there's no mistaking that you've entered a quintessentially French Restaurant. The chef and owner, Frits, has recently been selected a semi finalist for the 2008 Best Chef (Mid Atlantic) by the James Beard Foundation. Time Magazine calls the JBF Awards the "Oscars of the Culinary World."
We've been known to enjoy an evening there from time to time. A sample starter might be a Martini d'Homard a la Belmont (Lobster Martini). This rock lobster tail is poached in butter, garlic, and shallots, served in a martini glass over a bed of seaweed salad, and topped with a dollop of saffron-vodka cream sauce. Just three words...To Die For!! Entree offerings range from Tournedos Bearnaise to Sole Meuniere, deboned and served tableside. For dessert, we recommend either the Grand Marnier Souffle served with warm creme anglaise or quite possibly the best cheese plate you will ever have...Europe included!
Reservations recommended. Oh, by the way, be prepared to be set back a couple of Benjamins!
Millie’s Diner
2603 E. Main Street, Richmond
804.643.5512
Millie's is not your mother's diner. Let's just say that out loud. The menu boasts an eclectic fusion of cuisine with influences from around the world. It is 3.8 miles from the Inn, and if it were closer, we
would be regulars like Norm and Cliff from Cheers. (I know...we're spoiled!)
Millie's has 2 kitchens. The mini kitchen, located at the bar, prepares only their signature dish, Thai Spicy Shrimp. If you're only
going to Millie's once, you have to try this. It makes your mouth happy! If you're there with friends, try a few different things and share. Here are a few of their newest temptations:
- Crispy Rendered Duck Breast With Foie Gras Mac 'N' Cheese, Grilled Asparagus
- Pan Seared Flounder With Smoky Collard Greens & Southern Spoonbread
- Millie's Cowboy Steak (Suggested For Two) With Pan Fried Shad Roe, Dirty Mashed Potatoes & Sangria Butter
